Knowing Your Need for God
By Lindsay Williamson, Director of Children's Ministries
“Blessed are those who are spiritually needy. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.” (Matthew 5.3 NIrV)
Jesus teaches us that we will be blessed when we recognize that we NEED God. God doesn’t want us to be self-sufficient and think we can do this all on our own. He wants to be invited into every single part of our lives. Jesus even tells us that we will be blessed with the kingdom of heaven when we say “I need you God.”
We asked a few of our Providence KIDS, "When do you feel like your spirit needs God the most?" Here’s what they had to say!
"My spirit most needs God when I feel sad. Like when the tornado happened. When I feel like this I ask God to help me think happy thoughts." Eli Harkness, age 5
"My spirit most needs God when I feel angry. Like when I fight with my friends. When I feel like this I hug myself and count to ten. It's like I'm hugging God which makes me feel calmer." Cassie Miller, age 7
"I most need God when I am afraid. What I do then is think about all the things he has made for me and given me." Matthew Vaughn, age 8
"I need God the most when I hurt myself or break a bone. I pray for God to heal my bones." Griffin Sanford, age 9
"I need God the most when I want to take a risk, or do something hard or scary. I ask God to make me brave, and it always works." Brenner Sanford, age 11
What about you? Use these questions for reflection or as a way to connect with others.
What are some things that you are responsible for or feel self-sufficient in doing? How might you recognize your need for God in those things?
Has there been a specific time that you tried to do something on your own instead of going to God for help?
When do you feel like your spirit needs God the most? What should you do about it?
